15 AUGUST 2011 MINUTES
BUSINESS MEETING

1) Call to Order:
The Business Meeting was was called to order by Chairperson Agatha Coggins at 7:15 pm. She then asked that several visitors introduce themselves.

PROGRAM

Our speaker for the evening was Wanda O'Callaghan. Wanda is a charter member of the Oglethorpe County Bee Club and has hosted many workshops with her hives in which we learned the basics of beekeeping. She is also the first of our members to become a Certified Master Beekeeper.

Wanda spoke about her recent extended visit to Honeypie Hives and Herbals in a presentation entitled "Can Beekeeping be a Business?" This summer Wanda spent 2 weeks with her niece's family in Prince Edward County, Ontario, Canada. The family has over 70 honeybee hives. Wanda explained how this family of four has become self-supporting with their business of beekeeping over the last ten years, lost most of their bees, and have rebuilt the business. It is much a home business with all in the family participating and much of the living space in the house doing double duty for preparation of one of several products the family produces for the business.

Wanda also distributed three handouts with additional information about beekeeping as a business and small business in general. One of these itemized in detail the Advantages and the Costs of the Honeypie Business. Wanda refused to present more than the facts, claiming that decisions about forming a business involved more than just the facts of one particular experience.

A very detailed and careful presentation which was well received by the Club. Thanks to Wanda!
